This February, the Art Space at SCLSNJ’s Warren Township Library branch will feature paintings by Warren resident Michael R. Fontana.  After many years of painting in various styles and using different media, Fontana settled into abstract expressionism. His medium of choice is latex, enamel house paint which he applies to large canvases, stretched over wood frames, and laid out flat on the studio floor. His pieces are evocative of the artwork made famous by the influential American painter, Jackson Pollock, known for his unique “splatter and drip” style and action paintings.

Fontana’s art has been primarily inspired by his love of winter outdoor activities, including arctic living and mountain climbing. During the 1980s, while living in Alaska, he discovered the painting style that would successfully capture the winter experiences and landscapes he enjoys.

“I see my paintings as ‘tools’ that will hopefully lead the viewer into a deep meditative and contemplative state,” said Fontana. “I am looking for a complete visual immersion, allowing the viewer to be drawn to the whole canvas, rather than having focal point distractions.”

The paintings of Michael R. Fontana will be available for viewing during regular Library hours in the Art Space at SCLSNJ’s Warren Township Library branch, located at 42 Mountain Boulevard, on the first floor of the Library through February 29, 2016.
